Intel offshores chips to Vietnam

Intel is to build two chip factories in Vietnam. Here’s the details from BBC:

The world’s largest chipmaker, Intel, will invest $1bn (£522m) building two production plants in a science park outside of Ho Chi Minh City.

At the time, Intel’s commitment to the fast-growing nation was the biggest investment by a US firm in Vietnam. The first phase of Intel’s plant was scheduled to employ 1,200 people, but the expanded site should create up to 4,000 jobs.

Ho Chi Min City (Saigon) has been growing at an astounding rate. The GDP per capita is $1,300, which is more than twice the national GDP figure. In addition, Vietnam has just beaten India in terms of direct foreign investment, definitely an accomplishment for a Communist state. Ironically, even a leading Bulgarian IT company has opened offices in Ho Chi Minh City.
